Marina di Ragusa
Il porto turistico
Marina di Ragusa is only 6 km from Punta Secca. It is the best-equipped and most famous tourist spot in South-eastern Sicily formerly known as Mazzarelli, from the Arabic “Marsa A’Rillah”, i.e., small harbour, first mentioned by the arabic geographer Edrisi (Ceuta, 1099- Sicily, 1164) while the historian Tommaso Fazello (Sciacca 1498- Palermo 1570) wrote that Mazzarelli was a safe harbour from pirates of the Barberia that flourished in the Maltese Channel. The small boats bound for Malta would wait for nightfall to escape the pirates or if the weather was bad, they would spend the night there.
